The Ultimate Guide to Coffee Enemas: Benefits, How to Do It, and Research-Backed Science

Coffee enemas have been used for centuries as a natural detoxification method, and they’re making a major comeback in the wellness world. Whether you’re looking to support liver detoxification, boost energy, or enhance gut health, coffee enemas might be a powerful addition to your routine.

In this blog, we’ll dive into the benefits of coffee enemas, step-by-step instructions on how to do them, and research-backed studies on their effectiveness—including how they help increase glutathione levels, support parasite cleansing, and even how they are used in many cancer treatment plans.

Benefits of Coffee Enemas

  1. Boosts Liver Detoxification

    • Coffee enemas stimulate the production of glutathione in the liver, the body’s master antioxidant, which helps neutralize toxins and support liver function.

    • Many people in the holistic community say that coffee enemas can increase glutathione production by up to 600%, significantly improving the body's detox capabilities. I haven't found solid research on exactly how much it increases glutathione production but this was an interesting blog you can read more about it on.

  2. Supports Parasite Cleansing

    • Coffee enemas help flush out toxins and debris from the colon and bile ducts, creating an environment that makes it harder for parasites to thrive.

    • Many natural health practitioners recommend coffee enemas as part of a parasite cleanse to remove waste and improve gut health.

  3. Aids in Cancer Treatment

    • Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy, in her book The Cancer Revolution, discusses how coffee enemas support the body's detox pathways, which is crucial for those undergoing cancer treatment. It is one thing she recommends for both prevention and treatment of cancer. Dr. Connealy is a wealth of information, I highly recommend following her on Instagram here.

    • Coffee enemas are the primary method of detoxification of the tissues and blood on the Gerson Therapy for cancer treatment.

    • Coffee enemas help reduce toxic burden, improve bile flow, and support the liver in eliminating carcinogens.

  4. Improves Digestion and Gut Health

    • Coffee enemas stimulate the colon and help remove waste more efficiently, reducing bloating and constipation.

    • The compounds in coffee, such as caffeine and palmitic acids, help stimulate bile production and improve overall digestion.

  5. Increases Energy and Mental Clarity

    • By supporting detoxification and reducing toxin buildup, coffee enemas may lead to improved energy levels and clearer thinking.

Step-by-Step Directions for a Coffee Enema

  1. Gather Your Supplies:

    1. Use a high-quality, organic coffee. I like Equip Coffee or Purity Coffee as they are both organic and tested for mold. In my opinion the last thing you want is using a coffee that has glyphosate and mold and putting it into your body ADDING TO the toxic load when you are trying to decrease your toxic burden.

    2. A non-toxic enema kit like the ones from Happy Bum Co or a stainless steel one like this one. I have both of these. The Happy Bum Co one is much more easier to use as you can hang it up easier, but if you prefer to use stainless steel I totally understand which is why I have both!

  2. Prepare the Coffee: Brew 2-3 tablespoons of organic coffee in 2 cups of purified water. I grind up the coffee beans and boil it the purified water on the stove for 2-3 minutes then turn off the heat and let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then strain it. Let it cool to a comfortable temperature, you want it warm but not hot!

  3. Set Up Your Space: Find a comfortable, private area (like the bathroom floor with a towel).

  4. Administer the Enema:

    1. Make sure the tubbing is clamped and fill the enema bag

    2. Then prime your tubing by slowly opening up the clamp so the coffee gets into the tubing and down to the bottom of the tube.

    3. Lubricate the tip with coconut oil.

    4. Insert the end into your rectum while lying on your right side or in a knee-chest position.

    5. Once inserted and you are ready then you will slowly open up the clamp to allow coffee to flow through and into your GI tract. Do not open the clamp all the way up or you may get a rush of fluids into you that may be uncomfortable. Go slow! Only allow as much coffee in as your stomach can tolerate. If you feel to bloated or full then clamp it.

  5. Hold for 1-15 Minutes: There are different philosophies on how long to hold the coffee in before you expel it. Some say to put the entire amount in and then try to retain the enema for at least 10-15 minutes to allow the coffee’s compounds to be absorbed. Others say to only add a 1/4 of your enema at a time and then release it after 2-3 minutes to help break down some of the biofilms and in a sense "wash" your bowels as you are putting coffee in and expelling it out 3-4x per session. You can try both and see what you are the most comfortable with.

  6. Release and Hydrate: Afterward, empty your bowels fully and drink plenty of water and electrolytes to support detoxification.
