Tips for Managing Congestion in Infants

Congestion in infants can be challenging for both babies and parents. While it’s common during colds, teething, or changes in weather, it can still feel so scary as a parent trying to figure out how to help your baby breath easier. That is why I wrote this short blog, to equip you with knowledge, tips and tricks to help take the fear out of it! You've got this Mama! Here are some effective and safe tips for managing infant congestion:

1. Nebulizing with 3% Saline

Nebulizing with hypertonic (3%) saline is a gentle and effective way to clear mucus and moisturize your baby’s airways. This method uses a nebulizer to deliver a fine mist of saline solution, which helps break down mucus, reduce inflammation, and make breathing easier. Always consult your pediatrician before starting nebulizer treatments. I have used this desktop nebulizer and 3% saline for years and love it.

2. Use Saline Drops and Suction

Saline drops can loosen stubborn mucus in your baby’s nasal passages. After applying a few drops of saline, use a bulb syringe or nasal aspirator to gently suction out the mucus. This is especially helpful before feedings and bedtime. I prefer to use a mechanical nasal aspirator versus the bulb syringe or even the nose frida where you suction them out yourself. My favorite nasal aspirator is from Dr. Noze Best linked here. It was created by a pediatric ear nose and throat physician with medical grade suction. It works amazing! There is also a travel size of the Dr. Noze Best which is cheaper and smaller. However, this one off Amazon looks great too and is more budget friendly.

3. Try Xlear Nasal Spray

Xlear Nasal Spray is a natural option for relieving nasal congestion. It contains xylitol, which helps reduce bacterial adhesion while moisturizing and soothing nasal passages. It’s safe for infants and can be used alongside other remedies for additional relief. Xlear can be more hydrating to the nasal passage as well as help decrease the bacterial per cell count than just using saline. You can buy Xlear at most walgreens, walmart, amazon, health food stores or you can also save 20% on it through My Fullscript account linked here.

4. Rowe Casa Organics Decongestant Salve

This all-natural salve is specially formulated for little ones. Made with essential oils like eucalyptus and lavender, it can be gently applied to your baby’s chest, back, or feet to help open airways and promote easier breathing. Its soothing aroma also helps relax your baby for a better night’s sleep. It is definitely one of my favorites for congestion support, even my two year old loves it and asks for it when she has a cough. You can save 20% on your first order with code: holisticheidi

5. Run a Humidifier

Adding moisture to the air with a cool-mist humidifier can prevent nasal passages from drying out and loosen mucus. Be sure to clean the humidifier regularly to prevent mold and bacteria growth. We use this stainless steel one in our house because it works great and is easy to clean.

6. Warm Baths and Steam

A warm bath can help loosen mucus and create a calming environment. You can also sit with your baby in a steamy bathroom for a few minutes to allow the steam to work its magic on nasal congestion. One of my favorite tips is to take one drop of eucalyptus or a blend of essential oils that support your lungs like this one, and drop it on the ground in the shower, turn the water on hot to steam up the room and then sit outside of the shower to breath in the warm steam.

7. Elevate the Head During Sleep

Slightly elevating your baby’s head can help mucus drain more effectively and make breathing easier. Use a safe method to try and keep their head elevated. Often times this means holding them in a rocking chair or more upright during their naps.

8. Keep Baby Hydrated

Breast milk or formula helps thin mucus and keeps your baby’s nasal passages moist. Offer frequent feeds to ensure they stay well-hydrated.

9. Tummy Time

Supervised tummy time encourages mucus drainage and prevents it from pooling in your baby’s nasal passages. Plus, it’s great for strengthening your baby’s neck and upper body muscles.

10. Avoid Irritants

Keep your home free of smoke, strong fragrances, and other irritants that can worsen congestion. Regularly vacuum and dust to reduce allergens. We always have our air purifiers running through out the house to keep the air in our house cleaner. We have the air doctor 3500 in our main living room and the air doctors 2000 in our bedrooms.

11. Monitor for Signs of Serious Illness

While congestion is often harmless, watch for signs like difficulty breathing, or refusal to eat. If your baby shows these symptoms, consult a pediatrician immediately.

By combining some of these tips, you can help your baby feel more comfortable and breathe easier during periods of congestion. Remember to always consult your healthcare provider before trying new remedies, especially for infants.
