5 Easy Swaps for a Healthier, Non-Toxic Home
Creating a healthier home doesn’t have to be overwhelming, expensive, or all-or-nothing. In fact, a few intentional swaps can dramatically reduce your family’s daily exposure to harsh chemicals, endocrine disruptors, and indoor air pollutants — without adding more stress to your plate.
I always encourage starting with what impacts us most often:
the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the products we use every single day.
These are five of my favorite non-toxic home swaps that are easy to implement and truly make a difference.
Why Clean Air and Clean Water Matter So Much
We often focus on food when we think about health, but air and water are foundational. We can skip a meal — but we never stop breathing. And our bodies interact with water constantly through drinking, bathing, washing dishes, and laundry.
Because of this constant exposure, even small amounts of toxins, when encountered day after day, can quietly add up. Research from the Endocrine Society and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) shows that many chemicals can impact the body at very low doses, especially when exposure is ongoing.
When the body is constantly detoxing or reacting, it has less capacity to regulate hormones, calm inflammation, and support the nervous and immune systems. Reducing this baseline load helps the body do what it’s designed to do: detox, regulate, repair, and heal.
Why Indoor Air Is Often More Toxic Than Outdoor Air
This surprises a lot of people, but indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air can be 2–5 times more polluted than outdoor air, and sometimes even higher. This happens because indoor air is trapped and recirculated, allowing pollutants to build up over time.
Common indoor pollutants include:
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cleaners, furniture, and paint
Synthetic fragrances from candles, plug-ins, detergents, and sprays
Dust that binds to chemicals and allergens
Mold spores and moisture-related toxins
Pet dander and pollen brought in from outside
Considering most of us spend 80–90% of our time indoors, improving indoor air quality can significantly impact allergies, sleep, focus, and overall immune health.
What Endocrine Disruptors Are (and Why They Matter)
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with the body’s hormone system. Hormones work on tiny signals — which is why small, repeated exposures matter.
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals can:
Mimic natural hormones
Block hormone receptors
Alter hormone production and metabolism
Over time, this can contribute to issues like hormone imbalance, thyroid dysfunction, fertility struggles, mood changes, and immune dysregulation.
Many of these exposures don’t come from food alone — they come from air, water and the products we use daily, making home swaps especially impactful.
Why Synthetic Fragrance Is One of the Biggest Offenders
“Fragrance” or “parfum” on a label sounds harmless, but it’s actually a legal umbrella term that can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. Brands aren’t required to list individual fragrance ingredients because they’re considered trade secrets.
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), synthetic fragrance blends often contain phthalates, which are known endocrine disruptors. The CDC has linked phthalate exposure to hormone disruption and reproductive concerns.
Because fragrance chemicals are inhaled, they:
Enter the bloodstream quickly through the lungs
Bypass digestion and liver detox pathways
Accumulate with daily exposure
Fragrance exposure can worsen asthma, allergies, headaches, and respiratory irritation — even in people who don’t feel immediately sensitive.
This is why reducing synthetic fragrance is one of the highest-impact, lowest-effort changes you can make for both hormone and air quality.
Now lets chat about the 5 easy swaps I made that are low effort but highly effective at lowering your toxic load.
1. Swap Toxic Detergents for Truly Free Laundry Products
Conventional laundry detergents are often loaded with synthetic fragrances, sulfates, and preservatives that cling to clothing and come into constant contact with skin — including babies and children, who are more vulnerable to chemical exposure.
Truly Free offers a powerful, plant-based laundry detergent that cleans exceptionally well without harsh chemicals. Their refillable system also reduces plastic waste.
Why I Love It:
Safe for babies and sensitive skin
Eco-friendly, refillable packaging
Available fragrance-free or naturally scented with essential oils. I love the scented one that uses essential oils!

2. Swap Synthetic Air Fresheners for Air Purifer
Candles, plug-ins, and sprays may smell nice, but most of them release synthetic fragrance compounds and VOCs that contribute to indoor air pollution and hormone disruption.
Rather than masking odors, I focus on removing what’s actually in the air.
Air Doctor is a medical-grade air purifier that removes 99.99% of ultra-fine particles, including allergens, mold spores, VOCs, and airborne pollutants.
Why I Love It:
Removes allergens, mold, bacteria, and viruses
Auto-adjusts based on real-time air quality
Quiet enough for bedrooms and nurseries
I have one in each of our bedrooms and a larger one in our living room. It comes with an outer filter, so make sure to vacuum the outer filter to extend the life of the filters. It is truly disgusting how much just the outer filter picks up!

3. Swap Tap Water for Water Filters
Tap water can contain chlorine, heavy metals, pesticide residue, pharmaceutical traces, PFAS (“forever chemicals”), and microplastics (EPA, EWG).
Exposure doesn’t only happen through drinking — chemicals can also be absorbed through the skin and inhaled as steam during hot showers.
Epic Water Filters are USA-made and designed to remove a wide range of contaminants while improving taste. They eliminates up to 99.99% of the harmful contaminants other filters leave behind such as PFAS, lead, chlorine, microplastics, heavy metals, industrial & agricultural pollutants and trace pharmaceuticals.
Why I Love It:
Removes up to 200+ contaminants
Long-lasting, easy-to-replace filters
Available as pitchers, bottles, or under-sink systems
I have their stainless steel water filtered water bottles, their pitcher and their under the sink filter. I love them all, but the stainless steel water bottles are a must for travel and running errands.

Jolie Filters is what I use in our showers for filtering.
4. Swap Conventional Cleaners for Non-Toxic Cleaners
Many household cleaners release fumes that irritate the lungs and contribute to hormone disruption.
Force of Nature is one of my favorite cleaners. It uses electricity to convert salt, water, and vinegar into a hospital-grade disinfectant that’s safe for kids and pets — yet tough on germs.
Why I Love It:
EPA-registered disinfectant
Kills 99.9% of germs
One device creates endless refills

Truly Free also creates great non-toxic cleaners. If you want to peek at all the different cleaners they offer you can see them here. Don't forget you can save 30% with code "holisticheidi30" at checkout.
5. Swap Fragrance-Filled Products for Rowe Casa Household Line
Rowe Casa Organics creates household and personal care products without synthetic fragrance or harsh chemicals — supporting lower toxic exposure while still being effective.
Why I Love It:
Essential-oil based formulas
Non-toxic
Small-batch and mama-formulated
Beautiful glass packaging
I love their lotions, face wash, beeswax candles, their kids line, essential oils and glass diffuser.

Final Thoughts
This isn’t about perfection — it’s about lowering the background toxic load so the body doesn’t have to work overtime just to function.
Clean air and clean water support the immune system, calm the nervous system, and make hormone balance easier to achieve over time.
Small changes truly add up.
You got this Mama!
